The Juvenile Justice Bill: Senate Bill 253

Pictured above is Ms. Claudia Smith of CCHR testifying on the Juvenile Justice Bill, SB253.

Couched as a “bill of rights” for juvenile justice kids, this bill actually allowed the use of Tasers on children in juvenile justice facilities and those being transported to juvenile justice facilities.

This is interesting because while many states are moving away from the use of such things as Tasers and Pepper Spray, Louisiana seems to be moving full speed ahead.

One element notably absent in this “bill of rights” was the right to informed consent for psychiatric drugs.   Again, unlike many other states, Louisiana doesn’t allow juvenile offenders or their parents to make an informed choice as to whether to take powerful, mind altering psychiatric drugs.
